Jenese Brownhill
Jenese Brownhill, LICSW, is a passionate leader and advocate for juvenile justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As the Director of the Juvenile Justice Division and Governing Body Co-Chair of DEI at JRI, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s strategies, reviewing results, and setting the organization’s overall direction. Jenese’s career began as a District Based Clinical Social Worker in the Area- B2 Station in Roxbury, Massachusetts, providing vital mental health services to youth and families impacted by the juvenile justice system. Through her advocacy and support, she has helped countless individuals navigate various systems, including court, DYS, DMH, schools, and DCF.
As a champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Jenese has dedicated her 15+ year career to addressing the systemic inequalities in the juvenile justice system. Her direct practice experience has given her a deep understanding of young people’s and their family’s challenges. She has used this knowledge to create more equitable policies and programs. Jenese has testified as a mental health provider supporting raising the age policy, demonstrating her commitment to promoting fair and equitable policies for young people impacted by the juvenile justice system.
In addition to her leadership roles, Jenese serves as a Social Work Expert at Committee for Public Counsel Services. Jenese also participates in a community advisory board where she has worked alongside other passionate individuals to promote mental wellness, improve access, and enhance equitable practices and approaches by creating access to mental health care for Black and Latinx children and families. She has contributed to Social Work Today regarding the continued need for justice-involved youth and families. She encourages diverse and qualified social workers to explore this area of practice as a meaningful career path.
Jenese is a Jamaican native with a Master’s in Social Work from Boston College. She also completed a Nonprofit Management Core Certificate from the Institute of Nonprofit Practice in Boston and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certificate from LeadBoston. Her commitment to equity, advocacy, and leadership has made Jenese a valued and respected juvenile justice and DEI community member.
